5 Ways to Fight Holiday Bloat

December 15, 2020

We’ve all been there. As it gets colder we have fewer things to do outside so we spend most of our time eating, be that at home or at a restaurant. Humans do tend to accumulate weight during the colder months and the weather does really affect our weight. But why does that happen?

Reasons why you gain weight in the winter

It is no secret we all eat more during the fall due to the holiday season and all of the delicious food that comes with it. Who can resist pumpkin pies and thanksgiving stuffing after all? However, there is another (scientific) reason why we seem to experience weight gain and bloating during the co0lder months.

According to many studies and doctors, it is our evolutionary history that dictates the pounds we gain and the ones we shed apparently. It turns out it’s not you, it’s not me either, it’s our evolutionary response to the cold weather. Storing food for the colder months is an instinct that has been written into our DNA ever since pre-industrial humans.

A study done on the seasonal variation in food intake, physical activity, and bodyweight tells us the same thing. Data from 593 participants aged 20 to 70 for a 1 year period shows us that daily caloric intake was higher by 86 kcal/day during the fall in comparison to spring. The lowest physical activity was observed during the winter months and the highest during the spring.

How to avoid winter weight gain & bloat

Gaining a little weight during the holiday season is not the end of the world, however, every holiday can add up and you can exercience long term issues regarding your health and weight. This is why it is so important to tackle the issue from the start and combat the wight gain while it’s sill easy. Here’s how.

Stay consistent with your exercise & diet

Consistency=success, there’s no way around it really. It is important that even though you’re consuming more calories during the winter time, you stay as active as always. Incorporating more HIIT & Cardio workouts into your workout routine is key so that you burn the calories you are consuming.

Don’t go to a party hungry

This one is really interesting and can be really helpful if you have a lot of parties planned for the holiday season (although that’s less likely to happen due to covid). Before you go to a party, even if it is a dinner party with your family. Fruits and veggies that are high on fiber can be of great help for this occasion. That’s where we should get our carbgs after all. Try having a protein smoothie or shake.

The Fitonomy Protein Powders are made100% from grass-fed cows, not treated with the synthetic hormone rBGH and contain three types of protein for better results. Try the Lean Whey Protein Powder or the Vegan Protein Powder.

Avoid alcohol

Alcohol is full of calories, and it’s really easy to overdo it, especially if you enjoy drinking. Weight gain is only one of the ways it can damage your health but it’s also one most people fail to mention. Since most holiday celebrations include alcohol, it can be hard to avoid it completely so a good way to minimize the damage is to drink water or another beverage in between glasses of alcohol.

Damage control

If you overeat, don’t just give up and accept the fact that you’ll gain weight or get bloated. Combat the calories by eating healthier the next day and increasing the intensity of your workouts. Use the stairs instead of the elevator, take a walk after work, walk everywhere you can and remember to drink tons of water. Weight loss supplements can also ge a great way to burn those calories faster.
