You want to workout, but there’s an issue. Gyms are out of your budget or there isn’t one nearby, and the weather makes it hard to regularly exercise outside. Why not create your own workout space at home? Even if you don’t have a lot of room, there are ways to make the most of the space you do have. Here is a simple guide to setting up your very own at-home gym.
Choose Your Space
First things first: find a space you can dedicate to your workouts. It might be a spare bedroom, an undercover space outside or even a corner of the living room. Ideally, you want a space that is just used for working out, but that may not always be practical. You may have to make the space flexible, so that it can be used for other purposes too.
Add a Full Length Mirror
Gyms don’t have mirrors so people can admire their workout outfits; they are there so you can keep an eye on your form. Adding mirrors to your at-home workout space actually serves two purposes. Firstly, you’ll be able to keep an eye on your form as you run or lift weights. Secondly, mirrors add extra dimensions to the room, giving the illusion of more space and light.
Bring in the Essential Equipment
An effective workout space doesn’t need a whole bunch of expensive equipment. Some of the best equipment to put in your home gym is reasonably cheap and doesn’t take up a lot of room. Kit your space out with a yoga mat for stretching and a bit of cushioning under your feet. Other equipment that might be useful is a skipping rope (great for cardio), some adjustable weights, a foam roller and resistance bands.
Organise the Space
Clutter in any room can be distracting, and this also applies to your workout space. Keeping the area organised will help you make the most of your available space when you’re working out. Look for clever storage solutions, like an ottoman that you can load bulkier items into, or open shelves to help keep the floor space clear.
Make it Motivational
Your home gym is a space you can call your own. A boring, impractical or uninspiring space is not going to make you want to workout. Taking the time to personalise your workout space, whether by adding a motivating poster or colour coordinating your equipment, can make it more attractive and enjoyable to use.
